Borussia Dortmund achieved a Semi-Final finish in the European Cup in the late 1960s, but in the UEFA Champions League era, their successes were more tangible.

In 1996/97, Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side beat Manchester United in the Semi-Finals to set up a final with Juventus in Bern, Switzerland.

In 2013 Jurgen Klopp’s side reached the final again, meeting arch-rival Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium, where they would go on to lose to a late Arjen Robben winner.

SSC Napoli have never come close to cracking the European Cup or UEFA Champions League code and have been rather disappointing in their efforts in Europe’s premier club tournament.

Their first two campaigns, with the great Diego Maradona in his prime, came in 1987/88 and 1990/91, and on both occasions, the Italian side struggled, losing in the First Round to Real Madrid and the Second Round to Spartak Moscow, respectively.

2011/12 saw the club do battle in the UEFA Champions League for the first time, and they did well to finish second in a group that included Manchester City, Villarreal, and Bayern Munich, losing just one game.

They then took on Chelsea in the Round of 16 but lost out 5-4 on aggregate.

The Partenopei suffered Round of 16 losses in both 2016/17 and 2019/20 to Real Madrid and Barcelona, but in 2022/23, they finally made it to the last eight, only to lose to Serie A rivals AC Milan 2-1 on aggregate.
