Inter Milan’s record in Europe was poor in the years that followed. However, they did reach the UEFA Champions League final in 2022/23, narrowly losing 1-0 to Manchester City.

Celtic and Inter Milan’s biggest ever showdown undoubtedly came in the 1967 European Cup final. Alessandro Mazzola gave Inter the lead from the penalty spot in the 7th minute. However, second-half goals from Tommy Gemmell and Stevie Chalmers secured a historic 2-1 Celtic win.
The two teams met again in the 1971/72 European Cup semi-finals. In a tense affair, both legs ended 0-0 and the match was to be decided by penalties. Inter Milan won 5-4 in the penalty shoot-out thanks to Dixie Deans’ missed spot kick.
Celtic and Inter Milan’s next meeting took place in the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League round of 32. The first leg at Celtic Park was a thrilling 3-3 draw and Inter narrowly advanced thanks to a late Fredy Guarin winner at the San Siro. Uruguayan full-back Diego Laxalt spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Celtic from AC Milan. Much earlier in his career, in 2013, Laxalt moved to Europe as a teenager after being signed by Inter Milan. He never made an appearance for the Nerazzurri.
