Celtic FC certainly boast a more impressive trophy cabinet. The famous Glaswegian football club has dominated domestic football and are the only Scottish team to ever win the European Cup. They achieved glory in Europe’s premier club competition in 1967, when they defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in the final. Celtic reached the European Cup final once more in 1970, and the semi-finals in 1971/72 and 1973/74, but have failed to capture a second trophy.
In recent seasons, Celtic has been a regular participant in the UEFA Champions League. Yet, Scottish football is not the force it once was and Celtic now struggle to compete with the biggest teams in the competition. They often take part in the group stage, but haven’t reached the knockout rounds since the 2012/13 season, when they were thrashed by Juventus 5-0 in the round of 16.
Real Sociedad is a proud club from the Basque Country in northern Spain. They have never won a European trophy, but did win back-to-back La Liga titles in 1981 and 1982. Their best performance in the European Cup came in the 1982/83 season, when they reached the semi-finals of the competition.
Since 1983, Real Sociedad have only qualified for the UEFA Champions League on three occasions: 2003/04, 2013/14, and 2023/24.

Celtic and Real Sociedad haven’t met in a competitive match since the 1982/83 European Cup. They faced off in the second round and the Basque club beat Celtic 2-0 on home soil. There aren’t many players who connect Celtic and Real Sociedad. However, Scotland international Kieran Tierney is one footballer who has represented both clubs. Tierney came through the Celtic academy and made 170 appearances for the club before completing a £25m transfer to Arsenal in 2019.
The Scottish full-back struggled to truly cement his place in the Gunners first-team, so joined Real Sociedad on a season-long loan in the 2013/24 season.
