Celtic FC and SS Lazio are two European clubs with incredibly passionate fanbases. The light blue kit of Lazio is almost as iconic as Celtic’s green and white hoops.
Although they may not be the side they once were, Celtic FC are a club with an impressive pedigree in the UEFA Champions League.
They famously won the European Cup in the 1966/67 season, beating Inter Milan 2-1 in the final.
SS Lazio are yet to win a major European trophy in their history, but did win the Cup Winners' Cup in the 1998/99 season before beating Manchester United in the 1999 Super Cup.
In recent years, neither Celtic nor Lazio have left their mark in the latter stages of any European tournament.
Celtic’s last foray into the Champions League knockout stages took place in the 2012/13 season, when they were eliminated by Juventus in their last 16 fixture. In the 2020/21 campaign, Lazio progressed to the Champions League knockout rounds for the first time in more than 20 years. There they were dumped out by Bayern Munich, losing 6-2 on aggregate.

Prior to the 2023/24 season, Celtic FC and Lazio SS had only met on two occasions.
The two teams were drawn together in the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League group stage. At both Celtic Park and the Stadio Olimpico, Celtic found themselves trailing 1-0 at half-time. Yet, the Italians managed to lose both games 2-1, conceding dramatic deciding goals in the 89th minute in Glasgow and the 95th minute in Rome.

There aren’t many players who have played for both these two clubs. One is Italian legend Paolo Di Canio, who began his career at Lazio in the 80’s. He would later join Celtic for one season in 1996, scoring 15 goals in 37 appearances.
Neither set of fans may remember Dutch defender Edson Braafheid, who recorded short stints at both Celtic and Lazio. He played in the 2010 World Cup final, but struggled to cement first-team club football outside of Holland.
