Biography Def Leppard

Joe Elliott (Lead Vocals), Pete Willis (Guitar), Steve Clark (Guitar), Rick Allen (Drums), and bassist Rick Savage formed Def Leppard in the late 1970s, having met in Sheffield.

They developed a strong stage presence as they honed their craft in live shows in 1978 and 1979 and became one of the premier British hard rock and heavy metal bands of the era. They were signed to Phonogram/Vertigo prior to the release of their debut album in 1980.

On Through The Night

Their debut album was a commercial success, with On Through The Night breaking into the top 20 of the UK Album charts and also making it onto the Billboard charts in the US.

Subsequent releases, High 'n' Dry and Pyromania, further built up the band's following, and the second of these got to number two in the United States, where they were proving an even bigger hit than back home in the UK. In 1982 Phil Collen joined the group.

In 1984 drummer Rick Allen lost his left arm in a car accident but remarkably returned to the Def Leppard lineup nonetheless.

Hysteria

It was Def Leppard's fourth studio album, Hysteria, that really saw the band break into the mainstream and score an immense hit.

The album went to the top of the Billboard charts and the charts in the UK and went on to sell an incredible 12 million copies in the United States alone.

The legacy of the album lives on today, and it is regularly cited among the best albums of the genre ever.

Seven Hits

The albums spawned seven hits, with Pour Some Sugar On Me, Armageddon It, Love Bites, Animal, and Rocket, all doing incredibly well in the US especially.

Adrenalize

The follow-up in 1992 was also a massive success and saw Vivian Campbell join Def Leppard, who supported the release with an incredibly successful world tour.

That album saw singles like Let's Get Rocked, Make Love Like a Man and Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad all chart well.

Slang, Euphoria And X

Def Leppard continued to release hugely successful albums, with Slang (1996), Euphoria (1999), and X (2002), all charting well.

In more recent years, their studio output has become more sporadic, which is not unsurprising, but every release is, without doubt, something of an occasion for fans of Def Leppard and the genre in which they are considered pioneers.

Diamond Star Halos

In 2022, Def Leppard released their twelfth studio album, and it was met with rapturous acclaim from fans and critics alike and was once again a top ten hit in the US and the UK as well as across Europe.
