Dizzee Rascal Biography

Dylan Kwabena Mills, aka Dizzee Rascal, was born in Bow, London, in September 1984 and at the age of just 14, he became a drum and bass DJ.

In 2003, Dizzee Rascal released the hugely successful Boy in da Corner, and the producer was only 18 when he put the album together. The debut album was a commercial success and earned critical acclaim. He earned the prestigious Mercury Prize for the release and won a host of other awards.

The week of the album's release saw Dizzee Rascal attacked and stabbed six times, with the dispute apparently having a connection with garage act So Solid Crew.

Hit singles in the UK from the album include I Luv U, Fix Up, Look Sharp and Jus' a Rascal. His second studio album, Showtime, broke into the UK top ten. 2009's Tongue n' Cheek saw his status rise still higher.

It reached number three on the UK Album charts, and the singles Dance wiv Me (featuring Calvin Harris and Chrome), Bonkers (with Armand Van Helden) and Holiday (featuring Chrome) all went to number one in the United Kingdom, the level of success one would never have previously associated with a grime artist. In 2010, he won his first Brit Award, having been nominated on a number of previous occasions.

It also made Dizzee Rascal one of the most successful British rappers of all time. The Fifth, his fifth studio album, came out in 2013 and once again saw him team up with big music stars. Goin' Crazy (featuring Robbie Williams), Something Really Bad (featuring will.i.am), and Love This Town (featuring Teddy Sky) all charted well. Over this period, he had changed from his earlier grime sound but was nonetheless still very much a beloved performer among fans of the genre.

By this point, international stardom was well and truly achieved. In 2024, Dizzee Rascal released his eighth studio album, Don't Take It Personal, which once again earned plaudits.
