San Antonio Spurs Tickets

The San Antonio Spurs joined the NBA in 1976, having previously competed in the ABA as the Dallas Chaparrals and the Texas Chaparrals.

They are one of only four remaining ABA (American Basketball Association) teams still in the NBA, along with the Denver Nuggets, the Indiana Pacers, and the New York Nets (AKA the Brooklyn Nets).

Early Successes

They were an immediate success in the NBA, winning the Central Division in their second and third seasons in the league, before they moved to the Midwest and, subsequently, the Southwest, where they compete today.

The Legend that is Gregg Popovich

Though it may be harsh, but perhaps accurate, to say it is true that the San Antonio Spurs didn't achieve all that much in terms of tangible success prior to the arrival of Gregg Popovich as head coach.

In his second full season in charge, he led the team to their first Western Conference title in 1998-99, and with the likes of Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Steve Smith, and Avery Johnson on board (and arguably among the best players in the NBA at this time), the sky was very much the limit.

First Ever NBA Championship

In 98-99, the Spurs beat the New York Knicks to win their first-ever NBA Finals title, and in 2002-03, they did so again when they beat the New Jersey Nets in six games, and two years later, they secured their third-ever NBA Championship when they defeated the Detroit Pistons in seven games.

In 2006-07 Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili played a key role in the fourth NBA Finals win of the Gregg Popovich era.

The team had to wait until 2013-14 to repeat the feat, this time beating the Miami Heat with Kawhi Leonard pulling the strings.

All of the franchise's five NBA Championships have come during the Popovich reign, which is some measure of the importance of the Spurs hero, who is now the team's president as well as head coach.

Downhill Slide

For all Popovich's successes, it is worth noting that arresting slide that has occurred of late. In every season from 2019-20, the team has progressively worsened, suffering losing seasons in each, and the team has a hard road ahead if they want to get anywhere near their previous heights.

Big Rivals

The San Antonio Spurs have a big rival in the shape of the Dallas Mavericks; this rivalry is commonly referred to as the I-35 Rivalry due to the interstate where the two cities are located.
