The first time these teams shared a pitch was in the 1935 FA Cup. Following an eventful 3-3 draw, Norwich City ran out 2-1 winners in their Fourth Round replay at Elland Road.
It wasn't until the 1960/61 season when Leeds United and Norwich contested a league fixture for the first time. Both teams were in the old Second Division and each of them won their home fixture in this particular season. The two sides clashed in the top flight for the first time in September 1972, as Leeds claimed a 2-0 win at Elland Road.
It was around this time Leeds United were a dominant force in the English game, winning the FA Cup and two league titles in the space of five years. Up until now, Norwich City's only major trophy is the League Cup which the Canaries achieved in the 1961/62 season and again in 1985.
Interestingly, both of these teams were founding members of the Premier League ahead of its inaugural campaign in 1992/93. This particular fixture ended goalless before Norwich stormed to a 4-2 victory over Leeds at Carrow Road. The Canaries would go on to finish 3rd that season, while Leeds narrowly avoided relegation.
The following season saw either side claim a 2-1 win against the other. Since then, however, Premier League meetings between Leeds and Norwich have been rather limited. Only in the 2021/22 campaign would they next go head-to-head in the premier division, with LUFC triumphant home and away versus Norwich City.
The teams would meet four times during the 2023/24 EFL Championship season, including twice in the promotion play-offs. Earlier in the regular season Leeds picked up 6 points at the expense of Norwich, winning 3-2 at Carrow Road and 1-0 at Elland Road.
