Lizzo Biography

Melissa Viviane Jefferson was born in April 1998 in Detroit, Michigan. at the age of ten, she started rapping, and at 14, she formed a music group with her friends. This is when her stage name was born, with Lizzo becoming a variation on her first name, Melissa.

In 2013, she was part of a hip-hop collective called Grrrl Prty, which played a number of gigs before splitting in 2016.

Her first studio album, Lizzobangers, failed to chart but gained her further exposure, and her second album, Big Grrrl Small World, helped push her towards the major labels, with stardom seemingly just around the corner.

By 2019, she had been signed to Atlantic, and she released her debut major label album, which was, in effect, her third studio album, Cuz I Love You, which went to number four on the US Billboard Album charts.

In 2019 Lizzo became the first black solo female R&B artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 since Rihanna seven years earlier. The track, Truth Hurts, spent seven weeks at the top of the charts and overnight made her one of the biggest superstars on the planet.

The follow-up single Good as Hell also performed well, and she followed that up with a duet with Cardi B, Rumors, which was another huge success. In 2022 Lizzo released her next studio album, Special, and that proved another turning point in her upward trajectory.

It went to number two in the US and was a top ten hit around the world and spawned another number one single with About Damn Time being, a roaring success. Lizzo has also taken to acting in a big way and has appeared on Saturday Night Live on a couple of occasions.

Though still towards the beginning of what is sure to be an epic career, Lizzo has already achieved a great deal and has the accolades to prove it. Lizzo has already won four Grammy Awards, including three Grammys in 2020. She has been honoured by the Bet Awards as well as at the MTV Video Music Awards and the American Music Awards, and you can expect the acclaim to continue long into the future.
