About Olympique de Marseille Champions League Tickets 2024/25

Marseille have a rich history in European competition, winning both the European Cup and the UEFA Champions League, and the club’s massive fanbase will be looking to their team to make an impact in Europe’s premier showpiece trophy this season.

OM have won the domestic Ligue 1 title on nine occasions with their most prolonged spell of success coming in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which admittedly is a time period that is more than a little contentious due to the dealings of former owner Bernard Tapie.

In terms of Marseille’s European history, the French club has achieved a great deal, and they made their first appearance in any continental competition way back in 1962/63 when they competed in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

1987/88 saw the club secure their first truly meaningful run in Europe, with the club reaching the Semi-Finals of the UEFA European Cup Winners’ Cup before they went up against a strong Ajax side.

The Dutch side secured a memorable 3-0 win away at the Stade Velodrome, and that rendered Marseille’s 2-1 win in Amsterdam, courtesy of goals from Jean-Pierre Papin and Klaus Allofs, somewhat irrelevant.

In 1989/90, Marseille impressed in the European Cup, the forerunner for today’s UEFA Champions League. Gerard Gili’s side beat Brondby, AEK Athens, and CSKA Sofia to reach the Semi-Finals, where they faced off against Portuguese giants Benfica.

Franck Sauzee and Jean-Pierre Papin netted in a 2-1 home win, but Marseille lost 1-0 in Portugal and were, therefore, unfortunately, eliminated on the away goals rule.

The following season OM went one better and got all the way to the European Cup Final during a season that saw three different managers sit in the Marseille hot seat. They beat AC Milan and Spartak Moscow in impressive victories in the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals, respectively, to set up a final with Red Star Belgrade.

The teams could not be separated after 120 goalless minutes, but it was Red Star who edged out Marseille on penalties to win the coveted European Cup crown.

1992/93 saw Marseille reach another inaugural UEFA Champions League Final, where they met a strong AC Milan side in Munich.

On this occasion, OM secured the title with Raymond Goethals leading his side to a narrow 1-0 win, with Basile Boli scoring the only goal of a tightly-fought game.

In 1998/99, Marseille secured their place at another European final, this time in the UEFA Cup, where they took on Parma in a one-sided game that saw the Serie A side win 3-0 in Moscow.

In 2003/04, Marseille impressively beat Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Inter Milan en route to another European final, going up against Valencia in another UEFA Cup Final.

Ivorian forward Didier Drogba, who went on to become a Chelsea legend, was in prolific form in this campaign, scoring 32 times in all competitions, but he, and his Marseille side, drew a blank and lost out to Valencia, with the La Liga side winning 2-0 in Gothenburg.

It took another decade for Marseille to once again mount a strong European campaign, but once again, they fell at the final hurdle. In the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League, they faced Atletico Madrid in the finale, only to lose out 3-0.

They return to the UEFA Champions League for the 2023/24 season after a strong Ligue 1 campaign.
