Pentatonix History

Pentatonix were formed in high school with Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying joining forces before Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola completed their original lineup.

They met as a five-piece ahead of the auditions of the third season of The Sing-Off, and they went on to win the title in 2011. the following year, they released their first EP, PTX, Volume 1, which proved a hit on the US Billboard charts.

Avi Kaplan left the band in 2017, but Pentatonix has nonetheless sustained their success from then onwards and continues to release successful studio albums and enjoy a spike in interest over the Christmas holidays when their seasonal tracks and releases tend to do very well indeed.

Their 2016 rendition of Hallelujah, which appears on their A Pentatonix Christmas album, charted at number 23 on the Billboard charts. Which was their best-selling single since their 2013 release of Little Drummer Boy, another Christmas cracker, which was on their PTXmas album release.

2023 saw Pentatonix release their Greatest Hits album and saw the band team up with a number of big acts, including Meghan Trainor and Jennifer Hudson, and the record broke into the US Billboard top ten, their highest chart placing in five years.
