Having been a mainstay of the Champions League at one point, Rangers FC had a rather lengthy hiatus from the competition. The Gers are steeped in history when it comes to the European tournament and have been able to create a reputation for themselves around the continent because of their efforts. Indeed, the Champions League provides fans with an intriguing number of fixtures at Ibrox when they are played, therefore attending the 50,817 capacity stadium is a must.
The Light Blues have had a number of star players over the years that have been involved in helping the Gers be as successful as possible, with men such as Ally McCoist, Walter Smith, Paul Gascoigne, Barry Ferguson and Shota Averladze having featured throughout different eras.
Rangers have played a multitude of matches in the Champions League over the years, although the title has continued to remain just out of reach. The Gers have a decent history to speak of when involved in the tournament, although recent appearances have been rather limited.
The Light Blues’ best finish came way back in the 1959/60 edition of the European Cup, as it was known then, when they reached the semi-final. The Ibrox outfit managed to beat the likes of RSC Anderlecht, Red Star Bratislava and Sparta Rotterdam, however they fell short against Eintracht Frankfurt.
There have only been a few memorable moments in the competition for the Scottish giants, with their Round of 16 finish in the 2005/06 Champions League perhaps one of the most recent ones to be thought of fondly.
Rangers managed to ease past Anorthosis Famagusta in the qualifying round, which led to a group with Inter Milan, FC Porto and Artmedia Bratislava. The Gers managed to finish second in the Group Stage and would then go on to meet Villarreal in the Round of 16, however the Spaniards proved to be too much for them as they were knocked out agonizingly on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate score.
