Wagneau Eloi scored a 90th-minute winner to secure all three points at home to Panathinaikos before they lost by the same scoreline in Athens. Mickael Debeve then scored a famous winner at Wembley Stadium, where they beat Arsenal, and that set up a crucial final game at home to Dynamo Kyiv.

Effectively Lens had to avoid defeat to secure the top spot and, therefore, passage to the next phase (as this was when only the top team in each group was guaranteed qualification), but unfortunately, Dynamo Kyiv won 3-1 in France to leave Lens in second place.

Joel Muller secured a second-place finish for RC Lens in Ligue 1 at the completion of the 2001/02 season, which brought with it a second chance at UEFA Champions League football.

Their group stage experience in 2002/03 started poorly with defeats away at AC Milan and Deportivo La Coruna, which sandwiched a credible 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich. Things got better in the second half of the campaign.

Goals from Adama Coulibaly, Daniel Moreira, and Olivier Thomert gave RC Lens a 3-1 win over Deportivo, and Morieira was again on target in a famous win over AC Milan, with John Utaka scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory. Muller’s side secured a 3-3 draw in their final game, away at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich, but they had to settle for third place in the group and were therefore eliminated.

Franck Haise’s side will hope to go a step further when his charges do battle in the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League campaign.
