Spain vs Poland History
There is no denying Spain have been the more successful of these teams on the international stage. The Spanish hosted the second edition of the UEFA European Championship in 1964, as La Roja triumphed over Hungary, 2-1, in the semi-finals before an estimated 79,000 watched on as the hosts defeated the Soviet Union, 2-0, at the Santiago Bernabéu to hoist a maiden European crown. Chus Pereda scored in both of these games.
Spain largely underperformed at the quadrennial event until finally reclaiming the title in 2008. A runners-up finish (to France in 1984) was compounded by multiple group stage exits. Finally, more than 40 years after last conquering Europe, the Spaniards ascended to the throne by beating Germany in the Euro 2008 final. Fernando Torres scored the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna.
Four years later the Spanish successfully defended their title, signed off with a dominant 4-0 thrashing of Italy in the final. 63,170 attended the Olympic Stadium Kyiv as David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres, and Juan Mata all found the back of the net for La Roja to claim back-to-back Euro titles which also sandwiched Spain's maiden World Cup success in South Africa 2010.
Poland, meanwhile, only debuted at the European Championship finals in 2008, but dropped out of the competition without picking up a win in three group-stage matches. The Eagles co-hosted Euro 2012 but again crashed out winless from their group.
The Polish reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2016, earning two wins and a commendable draw against then-World Cup holders Germany. Poland narrowly beat Switzerland on penalties in the last-16 before losing out to eventual champions Portugal, also on penalties.
Spain vs Poland Head-to-Head
The belated Euro 2020 finals would be the first time these teams crossed paths at a major tournament. Spain and Poland had previously met almost exclusively in international friendly games, with the exception of qualifiers for the inaugural European Championship event of 1960.
The two sides shared a group at Euro 2020 and played out a 1-1 draw in Seville. Robert Lewandowski scored in the second half to cancel out Álvaro Morata's opener.
