With three titles to their name, currently, no national team has a better record in the UEFA European Championship than Spain. They first entered the competition in 1964 and promptly won it.
Goals from Jesus Pereda and Marcelino gave Spain a 2-1 win over the Soviet Union in Madrid to clinch their maiden crown.
Surprisingly, they then failed to qualify for the finals in 1968, 1972, and 1976, and at Euro 1980, they were knocked out in the group phase in Italy.
Euro 1984 saw a return to form for Spain under national team coach Miguel Munoz. Draws against Romania and Portugal were followed up by a narrow win over West Germany, and La Roja then overcame Denmark in the Semi-Finals after a penalty shoot-out.
At the UEFA European Championship Final, they were powerless to prevent a rampant France side from lifting the trophy on home soil, with Michel Platini and Bruno Bellone scoring in a comfortable 2-0 success.
There then followed an extended period of relatively poor form. Spain were eliminated in the group stage in 1988 and failed to make it to the finals in Sweden in 1992. At Euro 1996 and Euro 2000, they were edged out in the Quarter-Finals by England and France, respectively.
Euro 2004 was another dud tournament, but what then followed was an extended period of dominance that has yet to be equaled by another national team.
At Euro 2008, at the finals co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland, Luis Aragones’s side performed wonderfully well. In the group phase, they beat Russia, Sweden, and Greece and set up a Quarter-Final against Italy, which resulted in a victory after penalties.
Their Semi-Final saw Spain thump Russia 3-0, and they then took on reigning World Cup winner Germany in the final in Vienna and the game was settled by a single goal from former Liverpool and Chelsea forward Fernando Torres.
Four years later the Spain side led by Vicente del Bosque were arguably even more accomplished as they made it back-to-back triumphs in Poland and Ukraine.
Wins over the Republic of Ireland and Croatia and a draw against Italy saw Spain top Group C, and a brace from Xabi Alonso saw off France in the Quarter-Finals before they edged out Portugal in the Semi-Finals after penalties.
This led to a final against Italy and one of the most one-sided in the history of the competition. Goals from David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres, and Juan Mata led Spain to a 4-0 thrashing of the Azzurri in Kyiv and their third UEFA European Championship title.
Euro 2016 saw an early exit, but at Euro 2020, Luis Enrique took Spain to the Semi-Finals, where eventual winners Italy beat them on penalties at Wembley Stadium.
Slovenia’s involvement in the finals of the tournament is considerably less emphatic. They have only once reached the finals, and that came at Euro 2000.
There, they started brightly by going three goals up against the Former Republic of Yugoslavia in their opening group game, only to concede three goals and end up settling for one point and not three.
They then lost to Spain before limping out of the competition following a goalless draw with Norway that resulted in both nations heading home.
Spain and Slovenia have only previously met once in the UEFA European Championship, and that came in the group phase of the Euro 2000 finals in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Real Madrid legend Raul gave Spain an early lead before Zlatko Zahovic equalized just before the hour. Unfortunately for Slovenia, Joseba Etxeberria put the Spanish back ahead just a minute later, and the game ended 2-1 in Amsterdam.
The face value tickets for this tournament have been priced by UEFA between $32 and $1,057.
