Spain vs Ukraine History

Ukraine are still relatively young in experience at major tournaments and don't quite have the acclaim which Spain have achieved in recent years. The Blue and Yellow made their first appearance at the UEFA European Championship in 2008, co-hosting the showpiece event with Poland. Ukraine beat Sweden, 2-1, in their group opener but would still crash out without advancing to the knockouts.

Another group-stage exit followed at Euro 2016, before Ukraine made it to the quarter-finals for the first time at the following edition. Andriy Shevchenko's side progressed as one of four third-place teams and went on to overcome Sweden in the Round of 16, but ultimately lost to eventual finalists England, 4-0, in the quarters.

Spain, meanwhile, have a fair amount of success to look back on. La Roja hosted the second edition of the European Championship in 1964, with just four teams taking part. The home nation eliminated Hungary, 2-1, in the semi-finals before defeating the Soviet Union, 2-0, at the Santiago Bernabéu. An estimated 79,000 spectators watched on as Spain captured a maiden European title.

The Spanish largely underperformed at the quadrennial event until finally reclaiming European honours in 2008. Other than a runners-up finish to France in 1984, La Roja were subject to multiple group-stage exits. At long last, more than 40 years after their last title, the Spaniards celebrated back-to-back triumphs at this tournament.

Fernando Torres scored the decisive goal as Spain narrowly beat Germany in the Euro 2008 final. Four years later La Roja successfully defended their title, thanks to a dominant 4-0 thrashing of Italy in the Euro 2012 final. David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres, and Juan Mata were all on the scoresheet, as 63,170 were in attendance at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv.

Spain vs Ukraine Head-to-Head

Their first meeting was a Euro 2004 qualifier as Spain won 2-1 thanks to Raul's two goals. Andriy Shevchenko had pulled one back for Ukraine but the Blue and Yellow ultimately failed to qualify and would only debut at the Euro finals as co-hosts in 2012.

Spain and Ukraine shared a pitch at a major tournament for the first time at the 2006 World Cup. Xabi Alonso, David Villa and Fernando Torres all netted in a 4-0 win for La Roja in their group opener. This game was played at the Zentralstadion, later renamed the Red Bull Arena and referred to as Leipzig Stadium for the Euro 2024 finals.

These nations would also clash in Euro 2016 qualifiers, with Spain once again triumphant over the Blue and Yellow. Ukraine recorded their first win over the Spaniards in the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League. Viktor Tsygankov was the match-winner at the Olympic Stadium Kyiv, but not before Spain inflicted a 4-0 defeat onto the Ukrainians. Sergio Ramos, Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati were all found the back of the net at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.
