Vampire Weekend History

Vampire Weekend were formed in 2006 when the original band members met at Columbia University. Two years later, after signing to XL Recordings, they released their self-titled debut album.

Debut Album

That debut record saw the band's original lineup in full force, with Ezra Koenig on lead vocals, Rostam Batmanglij on keyboards and guitars, Chris Baio on bass and Christopher Tomson on drums.

The record performed well, selling over a million copies in the United States alone and charting well around the world. The release spawned a string of strong singles, including A-Punk, Oxford Comma and their crowd favourite, Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa.

Contra

The band's second album, Contra, went to number one on the US Billboard Albums chart and took them to a whole new level in terms of commercial and critical acclaim. Singles from that album included Horchata, Cousins, Giving Up the Gun and Holiday.

2013's Modern Vampires of the City continued the band's run of success, once again scoring the group a number one US album as well as reaching number three in the United Kingdom. 2019 saw another chart-topper, with Father of the Bride performing well worldwide.

Line Up Change

During this period, Rostam Batmanglij left the band with the likes of Will Canzoneri, Garrett Ray, Ray Suen and Colin Killalea joining as touring musicians.

After a five-year wait, the group released their fifth studio album, Only God Was Above Us, which secured glowing reviews.

Vampire Weekend's Only God Was Above Us included singles Capricorn, Classical and Mary Boone and was backed with a lengthy world tour.

As well as selling millions of records over the course of the band's history, Vampire Weekend have won a number of accolades. In 2011, they earned their first Grammy Award nomination, and they then won the Best Alternative Music Album Award in 2014 for Modern Vampires of the City. they picked up the same Grammy in 2020, which was for Father of the Bride.
