Buddy Guy Biography

George Guy was born in July 1936 in Lettsworth, Louisiana and by the mid-50s he was on the road touring with bands in Baton Rouge. He moved to Chicago and worked with a number of legends, including Ike Turner and Muddy Waters.

Initially signed to Chess Records, he released his debut solo album, Left My Blues in San Francisco, in 1967, having recorded extensively with other acts. Arguably, being on Chess Records led to Buddy Guy being held back. He was predominantly used to back other artists, including the aforementioned Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson and Kolo Taylor.

In the 1980s his career experienced a big shot in the arm thanks to the Blues revival period of that time, helping to further his musical career commercially.

He signed with Silvertone Records, and his seventh studio album, the first of this record contract, Damn Right, I've Got the Blues, proved a commercial and critical hit.

Despite being a veteran performer, Buddy Guy was still performing dozens of shows a year, including a regular slot at his Chicago blues club, Buddy Guy's Legends.

In 2005, Buddy Guy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, fittingly done so by Eric Clapton and B.B. King. In 2012, he was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors, and in 2015, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys.

In 2022, Buddy Guy released his nineteenth studio album, The Blues Don't Lie, earning him another Grammy nomination and proving his unstoppable longevity as an accomplished artist.
