David Essex Biography

David Albert Cook, aka David Essex, was born in Plaistow in London in July 1947, and the internationally renowned singer-composer released his first solo single in 1965 with And the Tears Came Tumbling Down.

In the early 1970s, his acting career took off, and he starred in 1973's That'll Be the Day. and the same year, his track Rock On was an international hit and earned him a Grammy nomination. In 1974, David Essex secured his first ever UK number-one single with Gonna Make You a Star, which featured on his self-titled second album, which was another monster success.

He became a bonafide heartthrob in the mid-1970s and starred in Stardust, the 1974 sequel to That'll Be the Day.

All The Fun of the Fair (1975) was another top-five UK Album success and spawned a string of hit singles, including another number-one in the shape of Hold Me Close, Rolling Stone and If I Could.

During the 1980s, David Essex appeared in many major West End theatre successes, including Childe Bryon, Evita and Mutiny on the Bounty. In 1982, another hit came in the form of A Winter's Tale, which reached number two on the UK singles chart.

In 1999, the star became David Essex OBE after picking up the Order of the British Empire honour.

In 2013, David Essex teamed up with massive acts like The Osmonds, Showaddywaddy and the Bay City Rollers for a successful tour across the UK, and he continues to put on regular shows to this day, all of which are well attended by audiences that straddle many generations. In 2016, he performed on the West End in The War of the Worlds and was also a regular on the hit soap opera EastEnders, playing Eddie Moon in the show in 2011.

He has been a household name in the UK for decades and at the height of his fame was a notable celebrity and every live date he announces is invariably sold out.
