The Human League History

The Human League were formed in 1977, and their debut album, Reproduction, was released in 1979 by Virgin Records and was a moderate success in the UK.

The band's original lineup of Philip Oakley, Ian Craig Marsh, Martyn Ware and Philip Adrian Wright remained in place for their second album, Travelogue, which earned rave reviews and was slightly more successful than their first effort.

However, it was the group's third album, the iconic Dare, that truly put the synth-pop band on the map and saw significant changes in the lineup with Ian Burden and Jo Callis brought in and singers Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley effectively changing the direction of the band as a whole.

Dare went to number one in the UK and to number three on the US Billboard Albums Chart and has become a record with a rich legacy, often considered one of the best of the decade. The album included a string of successful singles with The Sound of the Crowd, Love Action (I Believe In Love) and Open Your Heart all doing well.

However nothing compared to the success of the band's most famous track, Don't You Want Me, which proved an incredible success. It went to number one on both sides of the Atlantic and sold millions of copies.

It remains the most well-known of the band's hits and was an awesome track that was way ahead of its time and is an amazing track when played as part of the band's current live shows, and clearly a highlight of every Human League concert.

The Fascination! EP, which came out the following year, included big successes with (Keep Feeling) Fascination and Mirror Man.

Three years later, in 1984, the band released Hysteria, which was also a big success, as was Crash (1986) and the follow-up Romantic? (1990). Meanwhile, Philip Oakley has experienced success as a solo performer, with his Together in Electric Dreams being a particular favourite.

In 2011 the Human League released their ninth studio album, Credo, which was a decade in the making and earned glowing reviews.

The Human League have sold millions of records and secured a host of accolades, including Brit Award wins and nominations at the Ivor Novello Awards and the Grammy Awards, and fans of the popular electronic group can make sure they see them perform by securing tickets for any event at our site.
