Deep Purple History

Deep Purple were formed in 1967 and have gone through a number of band lineups since. The band's debut album, Shades of Deep Purple, was released in 1968 and scored them a big hit with the track Hush, which went to number four on the US Billboard charts.

In 1971, the band released their fifth studio album, and Fireball scored them a number one on the UK Album charts. Their following album, Machine Head, proved to be a massive worldwide success, selling over two million copies in the United States alone.

Their 1973 smash hit Smoke on the Water is regularly listed among the best songs of all time and is the band's most successful and well-known song. The line-up on that track includes the band's leading members, including guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore, lead singer Ian Gillan, masterful bassist Roger Glover, Jon Lord, and powerhouse drummer Ian Paice.

The group's eighth studio album, Burn, came out in 1974 and was another commercial and critical success, breaking into the top ten in over a dozen territories, including the US and the UK. Deep Purple split in 1976, and that hiatus lasted eight long years.

Deep Purple returned in 1984 with their eleventh album, Perfect Strangers, which once again performed well. Indeed, the band release hit albums with alarming regularity.

Ritchie Blackmore left the group in 1993 and was briefly replaced by Jon Satriani and then by Steve Morse on guitar until he, too, left in 2022. In 2021, the group released its 22nd album, Turning to Crime, which will almost certainly not be the band's last studio album, and you can expect the veteran rockers to continue on, especially when you consider Deep Purple audiences totalling in the millions are desperate to see them perform live.

In 2022, Deep Purple's line up changed once more, with sensational guitarist Simon McBride joining the group.
