30 Seconds to Mars History

30 Seconds to Mars were formed in 1998 by Hollywood star Jared Leto and his brother Shannon Leto in Los Angeles, California.

The brothers were joined by guitarist Solo Bixler and bass player Matt Wachter and their self titled debut album was released in 2002 and was a moderate hit in the United States but still sold over two million copies worldwide.

Their follow up album, A Beautiful Lie, proved far more successful, breaking into the top 40 on the US Billboard Albums charts and selling over four million copies. That album included the singles Attack, The Kill, From Yesteday and the album's title track, A Beautiful Lie.

They quickly established a reputation as being excellent performers who put on a great show and their live dates often sold out in seconds. Thirty Seconds to Mars released their third studio album in 2009 and This is War built on earlier successes and confirmed the band's status as among the most successful on the rock band scene.

Kings and Queens, This is War, Closer to the Edge and Hurricane (featuring Kanye West), were all successful single releases from that album. 2013's Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams proved their biggest album to date, reaching the top ten in a number of key territories, including both the US and UK.

Up in the Air, Do or Die and City of Angels all charted well and over this period they were considered among the hardest working bands in the world. Indeed they entered the Guinness World Records pantheon by playing the most live shows during one single album release cycle, playing an incredible 300 shows.

The groundbreaking 300th show took place at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York and was followed by yet more dates as part of their Into the Wild tour.

That tour, which started in February 2010 and ended in December 2011, saw the band performing a total of 304 shows across 19 legs, in every corner of the globe.

2018 saw Thirty Seconds to Mars release their fifth studio album with America rising to number two on the US Billboard charts and featuring the succesful single Dangerous Night and in 2023 came It's the End of the World but It's a Beautiful Day, an album that drew critical acclaim and was well received by fans and another success commercially.
