Germany were triumphant at the 2014 World Cup, defeating Argentina in extra time at the Maracana Stadium, though France reclaimed the throne in 2018 following a 4-2 win versus Croatia.

The first time the French faced the Germans at the FIFA World Cup was back in 1958, in the third place play-off. Just Fontaine netted four times in a 6-3 victory for France, taking his tally at the tournament to 13 goals.

They wouldn’t meet again at the showpiece event until 1982, when West Germany narrowly beat France in Seville. This semi-final encounter ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, though another four goals in extra time forced the game to penalties which ended 5-4 in favour of West Germany.

Four years later they reconvened in the last-four as German striker Rudi Voller sealed a 2-0 win over Les Bleus for a berth in the World Cup Final.

Only in 2014 did France clash with Die Mannschaft at the World Cup for the first time. Mats Hummels scored the decisive goal at the Maracana Stadium and Germany went on to hoist the World Cup Trophy at the same venue nine days later.
