France vs Italy at the World Cup

Neither of these nations need an introduction to the FIFA World Cup, with no fewer than six world titles between them. Italy were victorious at two of the first three editions of the spectacle in the 1930s, but didn’t reclaim the throne for another 44 years.

The first time these countries faced one another at the FIFA World Cup, in 1938, was at the third edition of the tournament. France hosted the event and met reigning champions Italy in the quarter-finals. The Azzurri were 3-1 winners and they went on to successfully defend their crown.

Only in 1978 did the nations clash again at the World Cup finals, this time in the group stage. Once again the Italians were triumphant, by two goals to one. Michel Platini opened the scoring in a 2-0 win for France versus Italy at the 1986 World Cup, in the Round of 16.

In 1998, some 60 years after meeting in the World Cup quarter-finals, the two teams reconvened at the same stage in France. There were more than 76,000 spectators in attendance at the Stade de France, though no goals to show for it. A goalless draw sent the game to penalties, ending 4-3 in favour of the home side & eventual champions.

The European heavyweights contested the World Cup Final in 2006, and once again required a penalty shootout to decide a winner. Zinedine Zidane had put France ahead inside the opening 10 minutes but Marco Materazzi equalised shortly after.

The two goalscorers were involved in an extra-time incident which saw the French captain shown a red card for a deliberate head-butt on his opponent. In the shootout, David Trezeguet failed to convert from 12 yards and the Azzurri were crowned world champions for the fourth time.
