Hozier Biography

Andrew Hozier Byrne was born in Newcastle, County Wicklow, in Ireland, in 1990 and began writing songs at the age of 15. He taught himself guitar and joined a local school choir to further hone his musical talents.

He went on to study at Trinity College in Dublin and went on tour with a choral ensemble named Anuna, and became a backing singer for Billy Ocean.

Breakthrough

He signed with Rubyworks Records after impressing on open mic nights, and the label worked with Island Records and Universal Music. In September 2013, Hozier released his debut single, Take Me to Church, and achieved instant acclaim.

The song proved a monster hit, reaching number two in both the UK and the US, and went on to go 13 times Platinum on the Billboard Singles chart.

Debut Album

Hozier went on to release his self-titled debut album in September 2014, which broke into the top ten in both the UK and the US and received critical acclaim.

It sold three million copies in the United States alone and earned Hozier a bunch of accolades, including a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year. The title track has gone on to become an iconic song and one that still forms a key part of his tour act and helps Hozier to become one of the favourite artists on the music scene.

Other singles from his first album also charted well, including From Eden, Work Song, Someone New, and Cherry Wine.

Wasteland, Baby!

It would take Hozier almost five years to release his second album, and it was certainly well worth the wait.

Wasteland, Baby proved a big success, going to the top of the US Billboard charts and scoring another top ten hit in the UK. Singles from that album that performed well included Nina Cried Power (featuring Mavis Staples), Movement, and Almost (Sweet Music).

Unreal Unearth

In August 2023, Hozier released his third studio album, titled Unreal Unearth, which secured the singer-songwriter his first UK number-one album.
