Iggy Pop Biography

Iggy Pop was born in Michigan in April 1947; James Newell Osterberg (his birth name) started in music at an early age and was a keen drummer. He played in a number of high school bands and dropped out of the University of Michigan.

Iggy Pop's stage persona was a result of seeing Jim Morrison perform with the Doors in 1967, and he became a member of The Stooges with their debut album, following in 1969.

The Stooges album, their self-titled debut release, is considered a trendsetting record of the genre and a key release of the era. Fun House (1970) and Raw Power (1973) followed, with their best-known track, I Wanna Be Your Dog, coming out in 1969.

The Stooges fizzled out, and Iggy Pop sought to go it alone and moved to Berlin with his good friend and collaboration partner, David Bowie, in the mid to late 1970s. This was partly in a bid to aid their respective drug addictions.

This led to arguably Iggy Pop's most creatively fruitful periods and when he truly became a part of musical history. His debut solo album, The Idiot, came out in 1977, the same year as Lust for Life was released.

China Girl, which was released in 1977, went on to become a big hit when recorded by David Bowie, with the two artists often exchanging songs. The 1980s also proved a commercially successful spell for Iggy Pop, with Bang Bang and Real Wild Child charting well worldwide.

Blah-Blah-Blah (1986), Instinct (1988), Brick By Brick (1990) and American Caesar (1993) all did well both in terms of sales and reviews and proved that Iggy Pop was still very much capable of making an impact on the music scene.

In 2016, Iggy Pop released his seventh studio album, which is seen by many as among his best-ever albums, with Post Pop Depression being produced by Josh Homme of the Queens of the Stone Age, featuring Matt Helders, member of the Arctic Monkeys, on drums.

A born performer, Iggy Pop continues to play live regularly, and in 2023, he played with Blondie and punk group Generation Sex in London to much acclaim.

Iggy Pop has gone on to sell millions of records and won a host of accolades. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
