Italy vs Poland History
There are contrasting records between these two national teams at the UEFA European Championship. Italy won this title for the second time at the belated Euro 2020, defeating England on penalties at Wembley Stadium.
The Azzurri had previously ascended to the European throne back in 1968, in what was only the third edition of the showpiece event. Only four teams participated in the event: England, Italy, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia. The Italians hosted the spectacle and edged past the Soviet Union, via a coin toss, in the semi-finals before overcoming Yugoslavia, 2-0, at the Stadio Olimpico.
In later years Italy would end runners-up to France at Euro 2000 and then to Spain at the 2012 edition. Poland, meanwhile, only debuted at the European Championship finals in 2008, but exited the competition winless in the group stage. Poland co-hosted Euro 2012 but again crashed out from the groups without recording victory.
Poland reached the quarter-finals at Euro 2016, earning two wins and a commendable draw against then-World Cup holders Germany. The Eagles narrowly beat Switzerland on penalties in the last-16 before losing out to eventual champions Portugal, also on penalties.
Italy vs Poland Head-to-Head
The first time these teams shared a football pitch at a major tournament was in 1974 as Italy and Poland shared a group at the FIFA World Cup held in West Germany. Only 1 point separated the teams ahead of kick-off at the Neckarstadion (later known as the Stuttgart Arena for Euro 2024). Poland ran out 2-1 winners as Fabio Capello's late consolation goal wasn't enough for the Azzurri to advance to the second group stage.
Italy and Poland reconvened at the 1982 World Cup, once again at the group stage. They played out a goalless draw and subsequently both progressed to the next phase. The two teams would meet again at the same tournament, this time in a crucial semi-final encounter. Italy won 2-0 with Paolo Rossi scoring once in either half at the Camp Nou and he was on the scoresheet once more versus West Germany in the World Cup final. The Azzurri claimed a 3-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, to collect a third World Cup title.
Subsequent meetings between Italy and Poland have primarily been contested as international friendlies, with a couple of World Cup qualifiers as well as UEFA Nations League ties.
