Italy vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record
Italy have one of the best records in the UEFA European Championships and have, to date, triumphed twice in the tournament.
They first entered the competition in 1964 and in 1968 promptly won the title by beating Yugoslavia in the final after an initial draw at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, by then winning 2-0 in the replay two days later.
They then failed to qualify for the finals in 1972 and 1976 before finishing fourth in 1980, when they also hosted the finals. 1988 saw Italy beaten in the Semi-Finals by the Soviet Union.
1992 saw another unsuccessful qualification campaign followed by a Euro 96 display that led to a poor group stage exit.
Euro 2000, co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, represented a return to form, and Dino Zoff’s side were unfortunate to lose the final to France in Amsterdam. They led through Marco Delvecchio until the 94th minute when former Arsenal forward Sylvain Wiltord scored a leveller and then fellow substitute David Trezeguet netted a winner in extra time.
Italy’s Euro 2012 final experience was an entirely different experience, with Spain thumping them 4-0 in Kyiv.
Roberto Mancini’s Italy side romped to a second UEFA European Championship success at the delayed Euro 2020 finals. They aced the group stage by beating Turkey, Switzerland, and Wales, all without conceding a goal, and they then edged past Austria in the Round of 16 to set up a Quarter-Final with Belgium, which they won 2-1 in Munich.
The Semi-Finals set up a tight encounter with Spain, with Mancini’s side securing a penalty shoot-out win to line up a final against England at Wembley Stadium.
Gareth Southgate’s side started brightly, and Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw gave the Three Lions the lead after just three minutes.
Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci equalized mid-way through the second half, and the game was an end-to-end affair that led, somewhat inevitably, to a penalty shoot-out. Even though both Andrea Belotti and Jorginho missed their spot-kicks, Roberto Mancini’s side still won the title thanks to failed efforts from Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka.
Romania have a fairly poor overall record in the UEFA European Championships, qualifying for the finals on five occasions and, in four of these, never getting out of their group.
The only exception to this rule came at Euro 2000 when they secured a memorable 3-2 win over England to book a spot in the Quarter-Finals, where they duly lost to Italy in Brussels.
Italy vs Romania Head-to-Head
These two sides have met in six previous UEFA European Championship matches, two of which came in the finals of the tournament.
At Euro 2000, Francesco Totti and Pippo Inzaghi scored the goals to secure a fairly straightforward 2-0 win for Italy in the Quarter-Finals of the competition.
Their second meeting came in the group phase of the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland. Former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu put Romania into a surprise lead after 55 minutes, only for Christian Panucci, another former Blues player, to score a minute later in a 1-1 draw in Zurich.
