Italy vs Finland UEFA Euros Tournament Record

As a nation that has previously won the UEFA European Championships on two occasions, Italy are rightly considered one of the most successful sides in the history of the competition, and their success in the tournament came fairly instantly.

The first time they qualified for the finals was in 1968, which they won by beating the Soviet Union in the Semi-Final, after a coin toss, before they took on Yugoslavia in the final, which saw the two sides draw 1-1 before the Italians then won the replay two days later, thanks to goals from the great Gigi Riva and Pietro Anastasi.

In 1980 they finished in fourth place, and at Euro 88, they secured a Semi-Final finish before failing to make Euro 92 and then crashing out at the group stage in England at Euro 96.

Dino Zoff’s Euro 2000 adventure was a far more impressive affair, with Italy easing through their group phase by winning every match before disposing of both Romania and co-hosts Holland to book a final against France.

Italy looked certainties to win their second-ever UEFA European Championships, with Marco Delvecchio’s second-half goal seemingly enough to beat Les Bleus in Amsterdam. However, substitute Sylvain Wiltford scored four minutes into injury time to send the game into extra time, and the Italians seemed to be in shell shock as David Trezeguet, another substitute, scored the winner for France.

Euro 2012 saw another strong run from Italy, but on this occasion, their UEFA European Championship Final clash with Spain proved a little more one-sided, with Vicente del Bosque’s side running out comfortable 4-0 winners in Kyiv.

Roberto Mancini finally ended Italy’s 53-year quest for another title when his Italian side roared through qualifying, winning all ten games, and through the finals tournament to set up a finale with England at Wembley Stadium.

The Three Lions took a third-minute lead through Manchester United defender Luke Shaw before Leonardo Bonucci leveled for Italy in the second half. Mancini’s men then won on penalties to cap off a near-flawless campaign.

Finland, in marked contrast, have only ever qualified for the UEFA European Championships on one occasion, and that came at the delayed Euro 2020 finals, where they actually won their first game, thanks to a Joel Pohjanpalo winner against Denmark.

The Finns failed to build on this success and followed up with defeats against Russia and Belgium to bring their campaign to an abrupt end.

Italy have faced Finland in six previous UEFA European Championship matches, all of which took place in the qualifying phase of the tournament.

The latest of these took place ahead of Euro 2020. Goals from Nicolo Barella and Moises Kean gave Italy a 2-0 win over Finland in Udine in March 2019, and the reverse fixture, in September 2019, saw Jorginho score the winner in a 2-1 victory, with both sides subsequently qualifying for the finals.
