Jarvis Cocker was born in Sheffield in September 1963, and he founded Pulp at the age of 15, though it took quite a while for the indie-pop band to get established in the mainstream. It wasn't really until the release of their fourth album, His 'n' Hers, in 1994 that the group broke onto the scene in a very real way.
The follow-up record, Different Class, shot them to fame, not least because of their iconic single, Common People, which reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, as did Sorted for E's and Wizz/Mis-Shapes.
Different Class (1995) and This is Hardcore (1998) saw Pulp ride the Britpop wave, with both albums performing well around the world and earning the band back-to-back UK number-one albums.
Pulp disbanded in 2002, and Cocker went on to work on a number of side projects as well as an acting career, which brought Cocker briefly into the limelight in film circles. Indeed he appeared in the Harry Potter franchise.
He worked with the group Relaxed Muscle on their debut album, Heavy Nite, and worked with Nancy Sinatra on one of her albums. Work on Nancy Sinatra's project then led to work with Marianne Faithful. Jarvis Cocker released his debut solo album, Jarvis, in 2006, and it performed moderately well commercially and was well received by critics.
New album releases have been frequent since then, as has work on soundtrack projects, such as for the TV series This is Going to Hurt. Pulp reunited in 2011, albeit briefly, and again in 2023. Their latest reunion has seen the group play a host of concerts, though new material is seemingly not immediately on the cards.
