Morrissey Biography

Steven Patrick Morrissey was born in Davyhulme, Lancashire in May 1959 and found fame as the lead singer and key songwriter for the iconic 1980s band, The Smiths. He fronted the band as they became a huge force in the music industry, securing commercial success and glowing reviews over the course of their brief history.

Alongside influential guitarist Johnny Marr, bass player Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce, the group produced The Smiths (1983), Meat is Murder (1984), The Queen is Dead (1986) and Strangeways Here We Come (1987), a quartet of astounding albums and defined the era.

Solo Career

The group split in 1987 having released just four studio albums, albeit this arsenal of work is considered by many critics as among the best ever. In 1988 Morrissey launched his hugely successful solo career with his debut album, Viva Hate, rocketing to the top of the UK Charts and also performing well across Europe and the United States.

That debut album included massive hits, Suedehead and Everyday is Like Sunday. His second album, a compilation of sorts, Bona Drag, saw further big single releases with The Last of the Famous International Playboys and Interesting Drug breaking into the top ten in the UK.

Arguably his most critically acclaimed period came with the release of his more experimental third album, Your Arsenal (1992) and the follow-up, Vauxhall And I (1994), the latter being another UK Album chart-topper. Your Arsenal earned him his only Grammy Nomination to date.

After a seven year dry spell, Morrissey released his seventh studio album, You Are the Quarry (2004) and that too signaled a return to form for the hugely popular artist. 2014's World Peace Is None of Your Business proved another monumental success and ushered in another chapter in what has thus far been a prolific solo career.

In 2020 Morrissey released his thirteenth studio album I Am Not a Dog on a Chain catching the performer in typically acerbic good form and earning him yet another commercially successful release.

An illustration of Morrissey's remarkable consistency as an artist is the fact that all thirteen of his studio albums to date have made it into the top ten of the UK Albums Charts.
