Journey Band History

Journey originally formed in 1973, and two years later, they released their self-titled debut album, which was a moderate success. Look Into the Future (1976), Next (1977), Infinity (1978) and Evolution (1979) all broke onto the US Billboard Albums chart, but it was in the early 1980s that they really started to make a name for themselves.

Their sixth studio album, Departure, sold over three million copies in the United States and included the hit singles Any Way You Want It, Walks Like a Lady and Good Morning Girl. In 1981, Journey released Escape, which went to number one in the US and sold over ten million copies.

This record includes the band's best-known song, Don't Stop Believin, as well as Open Arms and Who's Crying Now. By this point, Journey had become one of the most popular bands in the world and the epic songs were the result of the hugely influential union of the band's key members, namely singer Steve Perry and lead guitarist Neal Schon.

Frontiers (1983) and Raised on Radio (1986) followed and were both big successes. The 1980s were the band's most successful years and they reached global acclaim, known for their powerhouse pop hooks and a sound that was instantly identifiable.

After this, the band took a lengthy break, and it would be the best part of a decade before they got back into the studio, when they released their tenth studio album, Trial by Fire, in 1995, which reached number three in the United States.

Soon after, Steve Perry and Journey went their separate ways, and a number of lineup changes followed. In 2017, Journey were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have sold over 100 million records worldwide and still know how to entertain the masses who turn out for their shows.

Entitled Freedom, Journey's most recent studio album came out in 2022 and was well-received by fans and critics alike.
