Neil Young Biography

Neil Young was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1945, and he grew up on a diet of rock 'n roll, country and R&B, influences that helped shape the artist he grew to become. Playing in folk clubs in the mid-1960s, he gravitated to other legends of the era, including Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan.

His first brush with fame came as a member of the band Buffalo Springfield, who included Stephen Stills among their line-up, and their key release, For What It's Worth, became a huge counter-culture success and a top ten US Billboard hit song.

When the band split up, Neil Young went solo, albeit while also occasionally working with the band Crazy Horse and as a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Neil Young released his debut solo album in 1968, but it failed to achieve much in the way of commercial success, but fame was just around the corner. His third album, After the Gold Rush has become known as one of the best albums ever recorded and has gone on to sell millions of copies and helped to establish Neil Young as a key player on the music scene. The album included the contentious track Southern Man, which led to Lynard Skynard biting back to the commentary of the track with Sweet Home Alabama.

1972's Harvest scored Neil Young his first US Billboard number-one album and his best-selling release, and as an artist, he is without doubt one of the most prolific in modern times. His 1975 album Zuma was another to draw critical acclaim.

Neil Young experienced something of a renaissance in the early 1990s with his 1992 album, his 19th studio release, Harvest Moon, which proved a huge success. During this period, he toured extensively, including with grunge rockers Pearl Jam.

In 1993 Neil Young performed a beautiful version of Harvest Moon as part of his hugely successful MTV Unplugged album, which proved the old man still had a lot to offer.

Indeed, the stripped-back production proved that he is not the type of musician who needs to rely upon big production designs or elaborate video monitors to win over a crowd. Just one man and his guitar performing for one and a half hours, doing what Neil Young does best.

In 2023, Neil Young released his 45th studio album, and Before and After proved a big hit with critics and fans alike, securing glowing reviews and once again cementing his position as an icon of his genre.

Over the course of his extensive career, Neil Young has been bestowed a number of accolades, including three Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as a solo artist and once as a member of Buffalo Springfield.

Indeed four of the albums he has been involved with, either as a solo artist or as a member of a band, have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, these being After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Deja Vu and Ohio.
