Nottingham Forest FC is one of the oldest football clubs in the world, founded way back in 1865.
Yet, they remain one of the forgotten giants of the English football scene. However, in their heyday, Nottingham Forest were a serious contender.
Forest bagged a League title in the 1977–78 season and finished as a runner-up on two other occasions. They added two FA Cup titles to its resume of success in 1897–98 and 1958–59 seasons, while the opportunity to grab a third FA Cup slipped from its grasp in the 1990–91 season.
On the European stage, Forest twice won the European Cup, precursor to the UEFA Champions League. The back-to-back titles in the 1978–79 and 1979–80 seasons under legendary manager Brian Clough was a remarkable achievement, making Forest just the second English team, after Liverpool, to win the European Cup in consecutive seasons.
The Tricky Trees secured a memorable return to the Premier League when Steve Cooper's side achieved promotion from the EFL Championship via the play-offs in 2021/22.
Nottingham Forest have survived relegation scares since returning to the Premier League. First under Cooper, and in 2023/2024 under Nuno Espirito Santo, despite a four-point deduction due to financial irregularities. With the electric support from the City Ground playing a key role in Nottingham Forest's survival.
2024/25 ranks as one of the most impressive campaigns Nottingham Forest have enjoyed in years. Under Nuno the City Ground side flirted with a potential Premier League finish that would secure UEFA Champions League football, and in the end they had to settle for the UEFA Conference League.
The 2025/26 campaign saw Forest again flirt with relegation, going through four managers in the process. Vitor Pereira kept the Tricky Trees up and also guided them to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they lost to eventual winners Aston Villa.
After such eventful campaigns, 2026/27 is a season Nottingham Forest fans will be itching to watch live and in person, which is where SeatPick comes to the rescue.
Fans can get NFFC tickets at SeatPick and watch Forest live both at home matches and away on their travels.
Nottingham Forest History
Nottingham Forest Football Club started as a multi-sports club, but from the numerous disciplines members practiced, football showed the most potential.
This became obvious in 1892 when it triumphed in the Football Alliance League.
The first half of the 20 century was not the brightest period in the club's history, as they found themselves in dire financial straits.
After closing the 50s with another FA Cup title in 1959, expectations were high, and the League title escaped the Tricky Trees in the 1966–67 season when they were runners-up. It was a sign of things to come. The 60s were a period when crowds of 40,000 supporters were the norm at The City Ground.
Without a doubt, the most productive period in the club's history was in the 70s, with two European Cup titles and finally being crowned champions of the First Division in 1978.
Brian Clough's final season at Nottingham Forest saw the club relegated and as the 90s progressed it became clear that the tough times were returning.
The club entered the 21st century with a relegation to the second tier of the Football League, with the concept of a Premier League return being nothing more than a dream.
However, they managed to stage a comeback to the Premier League ahead of the 2022/23 season. Steve Cooper was appointed manager in September 2021 and took Forest from relegation contenders to promotion via the play-offs.
