Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool History

These two sides have something of an extensive shared history, and tragically the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 is perhaps the most well-known connection. The two teams were playing in an FA Cup Semi-Final in April 1989, and 97 fans lost their lives as a result of a crush on the terraces.

A number of players have played for both teams, including forwards Nigel Clough and Stan Collymore as well as Welsh defender Neco Williams.

There was more than a twenty-year gap between top-tier league fixtures involving these teams prior to their October 2022 fixture, but Nottingham Forest pretty much continued where they left off.

The City Ground has been a fairly tricky place for Liverpool to visit, and so it proved again when Jurgen Klopp’s side rode into town. Steve Cooper’s side put in an excellent defensive display and hit the opposition on the counter punch, with Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi scoring the only goal of the game ten minutes into the second half.

In March 2022, the two met in an FA Cup Quarter-Final clash, and it was Liverpool who edged out the win on this occasion, Diogo Jota scoring the only goal of the game with ten minutes left to play.

Way back in 1978/79, Nottingham Forest took on Liverpool in the European Cup First Round, with the Merseyside team having qualified as winners and Forest as league champions, and Brian Clough’s side took the first leg at the City Ground 2-0 with Colin Barrett and Garry Birtles netting.

In the return leg, Liverpool couldn’t breach the Forest defence, and Clough’s side went on to beat Malno in Munich to win the European Cup, a feat they repeated the following season.

Indeed Liverpool wins at the City Ground are very rare indeed, with none coming between October 1984 and that March 2022 cup tie. In 1984/85, goals from Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush saw them secure a 2-0 win though Joe Fagan’s side still saw their domestic title taken by local rivals Everton at the end of that season.
