Paul Weller was born in Woking in May 1958, and as a teen, he started The Jam, the group emerging off the back of punk and becoming an immediate success.

The Jam

Over the course of a whirlwind six years, The Jam secured a number of number one albums and singles in the United Kingdom, releasing hits like Going Underground, Start, Town Called Malice and Beat Surrender.

As the main creative force within the band, Paul Weller opted to try something new, taking his passion for music in a new direction by forming the Style Council in 1983, a far more jazzier and soul-influenced project and a world away from The Jam.

Style Council

Once again, he hit gold. The band's second album, Our Favourite Shop, went to number one in the United Kingdom and among their best-known songs are Shout to the Top, You're the Best Thing, and Walls Come Tumbling Down.

In 1992, Paul Weller released his debut solo album and the self-titled release proved a critical success and was followed up by the superb Wild Wood in 1993. Riding the coattails of Britpop, Stanley Road, released in 1995, hit the top of the UK charts and is considered among the best records he has ever been involved in.

Solo Success

Illumination (2002), 22 Dreams (2008), Sonik Kicks (2012), On Sunset (2020) and Fat Pop (2021) all went to the top of the United Kingdom charts, and in 2024, Paul Weller released his seventeenth studio album, 66, to rave reviews and once again, great commercial success.

Among his best-known solo singles are The Changingman, Wild Wood, Peacock Suit, From the Floorboards Up and It's Written in the Stars.
