Pixies History

The Pixies were formed in 1986 when Joey Santiago and Black Francis (real name Charles Thompson) placed an ad looking for a bass player, which led to Kim Deal joining the band.

The band released an extensive demo known by fans as the Purple Tape, which drew interest in the band from major labels and indie outlets.

Drummer David Lovering then completed the original line-up of the group, and the band released their debut album, Surfer Rosa, in March 1988.

The album received critical acclaim and charted well and led to the record appearing on the best of the year and helped to build the fandom for a band that soon gained a large and loyal following, which the Pixies retain to this day.

The album included debut single Gigantic and fan favourite Where Is My Mind? and was followed by Doolittle, the band's second album.

Doolittle broke into the top ten in the UK and once again received a great deal of praise from critics and fans alike.

Here Comes Your Man

The album included hugely successful singles Monkey Gone to Heaven and Here Comes Your Man, whose songs remain regularly included in the band's shows and are favourites on their concert setlists.

1991 saw the band release Trompe Le Monde, another great success and an album that appeared to be the band's last.

Break-Up And Indie Cindy

Black Francis chose to bring the band to an end in 1993 so he could concentrate on his solo project, Frank Black, but the band reunited in 2003 but did not release another studio album until 2014 when Indie Cindy came out, and by this time, Kim Deal had left the band.

New Music

Indie Cindy was followed by Head Carrier (2016), Beneath The Eyrie (2019), and Doggerel (2022), all of which were well received.

In 2006 a revealing documentary covering the band, loudQUIETloud: a film about the Pixies, proved a huge success and further boosted the exposure of the band beyond an audience that already revered the band.

As well as being a hugely successful band in terms of record sales and sell-out shows, the Pixies are known to be a massive influence on groups that have come since their formation.

They are one of the most favourite artists in terms of the popularity of their shows, and that's down to the exuberant and vibrant approach the band takes, meaning every concert is a must-watch event.
