Basque giants Real Sociedad may be smaller in stature than the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and even Atletico Madrid, but that doesn’t mean that the San Sebastian side have not achieved a great deal both domestically and on the continent.

In 1982/83, Alberto Ormaetxea’s side beat Icelandic side Vikingur and then Scottish giants Celtic before beating Sporting Lisbon in the Quarter-Finals to set up a Semi-Final with German side SV Hamburg.
They drew the first leg at home with Agustin Gajate netting for Real Sociedad but lost the return leg 2-1 and were knocked out in the narrowest of circumstances, with Hamburg going on to beat Juventus in the European Cup Final in Athens.
It took over 20 years for Real Sociedad to return to the competition, and when they did so, in 2003/04, the European Cup had long been rebranded and expanded to become the UEFA Champions League that we know and love today.
The team, managed by French boss Raynald Denoueix did well to get out of the group stage before losing to Lyon in the Round of 16. 2013/14 saw another long-awaited return, but Real Sociedad were disappointing in the group phase, losing all six games and subsequently finishing bottom of the pile.
In 2022/23, Imanol Alguacil earned his Real Sociedad side a fourth-place finish in La Liga, and that earned them another return to the UEFA Champions League for 2023/24.
