Scotland vs Romania UEFA Euros Tournament Record

Scotland’s UEFA European Championship record is pretty poor. They did not enter the 1960 and 1964 competitions and then failed to qualify for any of the next six editions of the tournament.

That run came to an end in 1992 when they did well to finish top of their group, with Rangers legend Ally McCoist netting four times in the qualifying campaign. Unfortunately, Andy Roxburgh’s side were drawn into the group of death and started with losses to both the Netherlands and Germany before beating the CIS in their final fixture.

Euro 1996 saw Scotland once again make the finals, which this time took place in England, who they were drawn alongside in the group phase.

In their first game, Scotland secured a handy draw with the Netherlands at Villa Park before losing to the hosts at Wembley Stadium.

Scotland won their final group game, beating Switzerland with Ally McCoist again on target, and so nearly made it through to the knockout phase but were pipped by Holland on the basis of goals scored.

It took another 24 years for the Scots to return to the finals of the tournament, and in Euro 2020, they finished bottom of their group with one point, albeit that came from a goalless draw with England.

Romania’s UEFA European Championship record isn’t much better. They have made it to five finals tournaments, but on four of those occasions, they’ve exited without a win.

The exception to this rule came in Euro 2000 when they beat England 3-2 in the final group game to sneak into the Quarter-Finals at the expense of the Three Lions.

They were then easily beaten by Italy in the last eight, with Francesco Totti and Pippo Inzaghi scoring in a 2-0 win in Brussels.

Scotland and Romania have played each other in four UEFA European Championship matches, all of which came in qualifying. Ahead of the 1976 finals, the two teams drew twice, and in the qualifying period for Euro 1992, goals from John Robertson and Ally McCoist gave the home side a 2-1 win at Hampden Park.

The great Gheorghe Hagi scored the only goal of the game in the return fixture in Bucharest, with Scotland still finishing top of their group to, therefore, proceed into the finals.
