Snow Patrol History

Snow Patrol were formed in 1994 with the trio of Gary Lightbody, Mark McClelland and Michael Morrison meeting at the University of Dundee.

The band released their debut studio album, Songs for Polarbears, in 1998, and it was a moderate hit, with the follow-up When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up, released in 2001, having a similarly underwhelming commercial impact.

Final Straw

However, everything changed with the release of Final Straw in 2003. By this point the line-up included Lightbody, McClelland and guitarist Nathan Connolly and Johnny Quinn, on drums. The album reached number three on the UK Album charts and broke into the top 100 on the US Billboard charts. It sold almost two million copies in the UK and included hit singles Spitting Games, Run, Chocolate and How to be Dead.

This was followed by an even more successful album with Eyes Open proving an astonishing release when it came out in 2006. It gave the band their first UK number-one and did well across Europe and the US.

Chasing Cars

Chasing Cars, the band's magnum opus has sold almost four million copies in the US and earned the band a Grammy Award nomination. It is actually one of the top 100 best-selling UK singles of all time, selling over three million copies. It's a fan favourite and continues to have a mind of its own.

In 2008 the band released A Hundred Million Suns, which was another commercial success and that was followed by Fallen Empires in 2011, which was supported by a huge tour. Multi-instrumentalist Johnny McDaid joined the band that same year.

After a lengthy hiatus, Wildness, the band's seventh studio album, came out in 2018 and once again charted well worldwide. 2024 saw the release of an extraordinary new album, the band's first in six years, with The Forest Is the Path produced by Fraser T. Smith being supported by another big expansive tour.
