Serie A side Napoli first played in the European Cup in 1987/88 but were unfortunate to draw Real Madrid in the First Round of the competition. They were beaten 3-1 on aggregate, and three years later, they returned to the competition only to lose to Spartak Moscow in the Second Round.

It would take another thirty years for Gli Azzurri to qualify again for the competition. In 2011/12, they did wonderfully well to qualify from a group that included the might of Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Villarreal.

In the Round of 16, they defeated Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg, with Ezequiel Lavezzi scoring twice and Edinson Cavani grabbing the other. Unfortunately, they contrived to lose the return game 4-1 in extra time and were therefore eliminated.

2016/17 saw Napoli get to the Round of 16 again, this time losing to Real Madrid 6-2 on aggregate.

In 2019/20, it was FC Barcelona that saw them off, but in 2022/23, they finally made progress in the competition.

They were impressive as they topped their group with five wins from six against Liverpool, Rangers, and Ajax and then easily beat Eintracht Frankfurt in the Round of 16, which set up an all-Italian Quarter-Final with AC Milan.

Napoli, who would go on to win the Italian title, were limp against their San Siro rivals and lost 2-1 on aggregate.

Celtic have secured tangible success in the competition, albeit much of that came some time ago. The Glasgow side under Jock Stein were a real force to be reckoned with across the mid-1960s to the early 1970s.

They reached the European Cup Final for the first time in 1967, beating Inter Milan 2-1 to become the first British team to win the competition. Three years later, they returned to the final but lost to Dutch side Feyenoord.

Semi-final runs came in both 1971/72 and 1973/74, leading to losses to both Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid.

In more recent times, Celtic have found it far harder to make an impact in the competition. In the UEFA Champions League era, they have occasionally produced shocking results, such as their 2006/07 victory over Manchester United, AC Milan in 2007/08, and Barcelona in 2012/13, but getting out of the group stages has usually proved a bridge too far.

In 2007/08, they did get to the Round of 16 but were beaten by FC Barcelona, and the previous season, it was AC Milan that dealt them a blow at the same point in the competition.

Celtic have never gotten further than this in the rebranded format of the competition, which is something of a failing for a team of their size and stature.

The only real player of note to play for both Napoli and Celtic is the great Italian entertainer Paolo Di Canio.

The free-flowing forward spent one season at Napoli in 1993/94, making 27 appearances and scoring five goals, before leaving for AC Milan. After spending a couple of years at the San Siro, he moved to Celtic.

In his one season in Scotland, Di Canio proved very effective indeed. He netted 15 goals in 37 games, and that form aided his move to the Premier League, where he would go on to become a hero at both Sheffield Wednesday and especially West Ham United.
