Napoli’s first taste of European Cup action came in 1987/88, but the Italian side were unfortunate to be drawn against Spanish giants Real Madrid in the First Round, and they were duly eliminated.

In 1990/91, they went one better before losing to Spartak Moscow in the Second Round and then had to wait over twenty years to return to the competition, which by this time had been rebranded as the UEFA Champions League.

In 2011/12, they participated in this new format for the first time and did well to qualify from a group stage that saw them go up against Manchester City, Villarreal, and Bayern Munich.

FC Porto are seasoned regulars in the competition and first took part in the European Cup in 1956/57. In 1986/87, they performed incredibly well to reach the European Cup Final but were expected to be defeated by German giants Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga side took the lead after 24 minutes in Vienna and looked set to clinch the title when FC Porto battled back late on. Artur Jorge’s team leveled on 77 minutes through Algerian international Rabah Madjer before Brazilian star Juary scored a winner with ten minutes to play.

FC Porto won their second top-tier UEFA tournament in 2003/04 under boss Jose Mourinho, with the Primeira Liga side beating Manchester United, Lyon, and Deportivo La Coruna in the knockout phases before meeting AS Monaco in the final.

Mourinho’s side swept past their French opponents with relative ease. Goals from Carlos Alberto, Deco, and Dmitri Alenichev gave FC Porto a 3-0 victory.

In more recent years, FC Porto have gotten nowhere near these dizzy heights. That said, they did secure Quarter-Final finishes in 2014/15, 2018/19 and 2020/21.

In 1974/75, Napoli eased out FC Porto 2-0 on aggregate in a UEFA Cup Second Round fixture.
