Napoli have underachieved for a long period of time, both domestically and on a continental scale. Gli Azzurri were crowned Serie A champions in 2023 for just the first time since 1990. The side from Naples has also failed to add more European honours to the trophy cabinet since winning the UEFA Cup (now known as the Europa League) in 1989.
The European Cup was succeeded by the Champions League in 1992, though it wasn't until 2011/12 when Napoli played in the remodelled competition for the first time. The Italian outfit qualified for the knockout stages, escaping a tough group which comprised of Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Villarreal.
They then took on Chelsea in the Round of 16 and won the first leg in Naples, 3-1, before being toppled by the Blues in the return leg at Stamford Bridge. The Premier League team won 4-1 on their way to winning the Champions League for the first time.
Napoli would also suffer last-16 exits to Real Madrid in 2016/17 and against Barcelona in 2019/20. Gli Azzurri reached the UCL quarter-finals in 2023, losing to Serie A rivals AC Milan.
FC Barcelona, on the other hand, have tasted heaps of success in Europe's premier club competition. The Catalan giants have hoisted this trophy no fewer than five times, with all but one of them coming in the Champions League era.
La Blaugrana won the European Cup in 1991/92, the final edition before the tournament was rebranded as the Champions League. Barca clinched the throne again in 2006, with victory over Arsenal, followed by a further two in 2009 and 2011 as Pep Guardiola's side swept past Manchester United on both occasions. Barcelona then defeated Juventus in the 2014/15 Champions League final, to become only the fifth club to lift this trophy five times or more.
Since that success, however, FC Barcelona have been mostly ineffective in the competition and will be looking to correct this anomaly in the near future.
A number of big names have played for both Napoli and Barcelona, including former France defender Laurent Blanc and Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina, but the most notable player to represent the two sides has to be Diego Maradona.
After breaking through at Argentinos Juniors and then Boca Juniors, Diego Maradona made the big move to Europe as he signed at the Camp Nou in 1982. Over the course of two seasons with Barcelona, Maradona scored 38 goals in 58 games, winning the Copa del Rey in the process.
He then moved to Naples, where he quickly became a true club legend. Over the course of seven seasons with Napoli, he steered the club to two Serie A titles, a historic achievement for the Gli Azzurri. Maradona's record at Napoli was impressive on an individual level, with the attacking star scoring 115 goals in 259 games.
The manner of his exit was not one that Maradona would have wanted, but the affection of the Napoli fans never dimmed. When he sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 60, the club opted to rename its home stadium, Stadio San Paolo, after the Argentina hero.
Prior to meeting in the Round of 16 of the 2023/24 Champions League campaign, Napoli and Barcelona had clashed in 2019/20, also in the last-16, when the Catalan giants triumphed 4-2 on aggregate.
The 2021/22 season saw the two teams battle it out in the Europa League knockout round play-offs. Barca were again on the winning side, 5-3 on aggregate, but later lost to eventual champions Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals.
In 2023/24, Napoli and Barcelona settled for a 1-1 draw in their Round of 16 first-leg tie at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Robert Lewandowski had given Barca the lead before Victor Osimhen equalised for Napoli to head to Barcelona with a fighting chance of progression to the quarter-finals.
