About SSC Napoli vs SL Benfica Tickets 2023/24

Napoli first qualified for the European Cup during the period that Diego Maradona was a hero at the club. That maiden adventure was ended in the First Round by Real Madrid in 1987/88, and three years later, after they won another Serie A title, they made it to the Second Round before Spartak Moscow picked them off.

It would take another thirty years to qualify again, this time for the rebranded UEFA Champions League.

On this occasion, the Italian side did very well to qualify from a group that also contained Bayern Munich, Manchester City, and Villarreal.

They then faced Chelsea in the Round of 16 but saw their 3-1 home leg win canceled out by a 4-1 loss at Stamford Bridge.

Subsequent Round of 16 losses occurred in 2016/17 and 2019/20, to Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, respectively.

In 2022/23, they went one better, beating Liverpool, Rangers (twice), and Ajax (twice) to finish top of their group before beating Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 in the Round of 16 before facing fellow Italian side AC Milan in the Quarter-Finals.

They then limped out 2-1 on aggregate to their Serie A rivals after a poor couple of displays from a Napoli side that would go on to easily win the domestic title.

Benfica have accomplished a great deal in the history of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, more than any other Portuguese side, and are still giants of the game, even if their last tangible success in the form of silverware came some generations ago.

It would be fair to say that in the 1960s, there were few teams as dominant as Benfica, and this was, of course, partly down to the presence of goal machine Eusebio. The Lisbon-based club played their first European Cup Final in 1961 and saw off FC Barcelona 3-2 in Bern, Switzerland.

The following season, they repeated the feat, this time thumping Real Madrid 5-3 in Amsterdam, Eusebio scoring twice.

They reached their third European Cup Final in succession in 1963, but this time, they fell to AC Milan 2-1 at Wembley Stadium, Eusebio having put Benfica ahead after 18 minutes.

Two years later, it was Inter Milan who defeated Benfica in the final, with Brazilian Jair scoring the only goal of the game at the San Siro.

Benfica made it through to their fifth European Cup Final in seven years as they took on Manchester United again at Wembley Stadium. A goal from Jaime Graca took the game to extra time, and that’s when Sir Matt Busby’s side went into overdrive to secure a 4-1 victory.

It would take two decades for the Primeira Liga side to hit the same heady heights, and their side in the late 1980s was a very promising one.

Benfica boss Toni saw his side defeated by PSV Eindhoven on penalties in Stuttgart, and two years later, they reached the final again, this time under Swedish boss Sven-Goran Eriksson and a single Frank Rijkaard goal saw AC Milan secure a narrow 1-0 win in Vienna.

In the UEFA Champions League era, the Estadio da Luz side has struggled to make an impact. In 1994/95, they reached the Quarter-Finals before losing to AC Milan, and in 2005/06, it was FC Barcelona that took them out.

2011/12 saw another last-eight finish, with Chelsea edging them out; 2015/16 saw Bayern Munich do likewise.

In more recent years, they have seen more consistent efforts in the competition. In 2021/22, Liverpool beat Benfica 6-4 on aggregate in the Quarter-Finals, and Inter Milan beat them 5-3 at the same stage in 2022/23.

SSC Napoli vs SL Benfica Head-to-Head

The two teams have met in two different European campaigns. The first of these occurred in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup in the First Round of the competition.

Napoli won the first leg 3-2, but in the return, Benfica triumphed 2-0 and therefore qualified for the group stage of the competition.

In 2016/17, the two teams were drawn in the same UEFA Champions League group, and Napoli won the home fixture 4-2 with Belgian Dries Mertens scoring twice, and the Serie A side also won in Portugal, with Mertens scoring again in 2-1 victory that completed a 6-3 aggregate success.

SSC Napoli vs SL Benfica Connections

Among those to play for both teams are Portuguese international left-back Mario Rui, Brazilian forward Carlos Vinicius and Swedish midfielder Jonas Thern.
