Napoli’s first European Cup adventure was a brief one. In 1987/88, they were drawn against Real Madrid in the First Round of the cup and were duly eliminated. Three years later, they returned and made it to the Second Round before Spartak Moscow sent them out.

It would take more than twenty years for the team to return to the competition, by which time it had changed its format and been renamed as the UEFA Champions League.

In 2011/12, they were drawn against Manchester City, Bayern Munich, and Villarreal in a real group of death, but still managed to finish second and secure a place in the Round of 16.

They looked good to continue their European adventure after beating Chelsea 3-1 in the then Stadio San Paolo (now known as the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona), but they somehow contrived to lose 4-1 at Stamford Bridge and were knocked out.

Real Sociedad, similar to Napoli, enjoyed their peak in the 1980s when they won back-to-back La Liga titles.

This led them to their forays in the European Cup. La Real lost to CSKA Sofia in the First Round in 1981/82 to end their maiden voyage abruptly, but the following season, they did well to beat Celtic FC and Sporting Lisbon to reach the Semi-Finals.

Here they took on German side SV Hamburger and narrowly lost 3-2 over the two legs to the Bundesliga side.

Their first taste of the UEFA Champions League came in 2003/04 when the San Sebastian side qualified from their group before losing to Lyon in the Round of 16. Ten years later, they returned to the competition but performed poorly.

Across their six group stage games against Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, and Shakhtar Donetsk, the Spanish side lost five of six games, secured just one point, and scored just a single goal.

They made it back to the top tier UEFA competition in 2023/24 for their fourth campaign in the tournament.
