The Wallflowers were born when singer-songwriter Jakob Dylan teamed up with his childhood friend, guitarist Tobi Miller, in the late 1980s. After a few name changes and lineup formations, The Wallflowers released their self-titled debut album in 1992. That release came on the Virgin label, which subsequently elected to drop the group.
Fronted by Bob Dylan's son, The Wallflowers have more than proven themselves in their own right. As a band, from their origins as an opening act to becoming genuine headliners, the Wallflowers live have always been a great act, and their studio releases have been consistent and plentiful.
It was a moderate success, but their second effort, Bringing Down the Horse, proved a breakout release, which broke into the top five on the US Billboard Albums Chart. This release came via Interscope Records, whose gamble on The Wallflowers well and truly paid off.
It went on to sell over four million copies in the United States alone and saw a string of his singles spawned.
6th Avenue Heartache performed well, and the next release, One Headlight, got to number two on the US singles chart and earned the group the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 1998. The Difference and Three Marlenas also did well.
Four years later, the band's third album, (Breach) did well and was followed by Red Letter Days (2002), Rebel, Sweetheart (2005) before The Wallflowers' sixth studio album, Glad All Over, came out in 2012 and once again gave the group a US Billboard chart success.
During the intervening period, Jakob Dylan toured with T-Bone Burnett. In 2013, the group supported Eric Clapton on his tour dates.
It would take another nine years before another album was released, with Exit Wounds coming out in 2021.
The Wallflowers have sold over 10 million records worldwide and won an array of accolades and continue to attract a big crowd. Their many lineup changes have seen former members perform with the Foo Fighters and Gogol Bordello and two have gone onto to be inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Wallflowers concerts are always hugely entertaining and their upcoming tour promises to be one of their biggest to date.
