Chelsea FC History

Chelsea have enjoyed a great deal of recent success, culminating in five Premier League titles, but they are also a club with a rich history dating back to 1905.

Chelsea Football Club have played at Stamford Bridge since the club was founded more than 115 years ago. The club was acquired by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2003, paving the way for heaps of success over the following two decades.

In May 2022, a consortium lead by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took control of Chelsea. Abramovich had relinquished control of the Blues a few months previously, due to the Ukraine-Russia war and the oligarch's ties with Vladimir Putin.

Gus Mears acquired Stamford Bridge Athletic Club in 1905. The club was subsequently named after the adjacent borough of Chelsea. Ted Drake helped the club secure its first domestic championship in 1954/55.

In the decades that followed the Stamford Bridge club didn't enjoy much tangible success, until José Mourinho was hired by new owner Roman Abramovich in 2004. The Portuguese coach led the club to three Premier League titles and a host of other trophy successes during his two spells in charge.

Coaches such as José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Antonio Conte, and Thomas Tuchel have all enjoyed success in charge of the Chelsea first-team. The trio of Mourinho, Ancelotti and Conte each guided CFC to at least one Premier League title, while Tuchel oversaw a Champions League triumph less than six months after his appointment in 2021.

Mauricio Pochettino became the 19th full-time manager to occupy the Stamford Bridge hot seat in the Premier League era when he was appointed in the summer of 2023. Pochettino would only last for one year as Chelsea boss and he was succeeded by Enzo Maresca ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The 2024/25 campaign proved to be an up and down one for Maresca and the Blues, albeit the West London outfit did secure a much-needed return to the UEFA Champions League as well as a trophy in the form of the UEFA Conference League, which they won by beating Real Betis 4-1.

Chelsea once again dug deep to improve their squad, with, among others, Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap and Brighton striker Joao Pedro joining the team for the 2025/26 campaign. These signings immediately paid dividends as the Blues won the expanded Club World Cup in July 2025 with a fantastic 3-0 win over European champions PSG in the final.

Chelsea FC Memorable Moments

2012 might be the most memorable year for Chelsea fans. The Blues reached the UEFA Champions League final and went head-to-head with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Chelsea overcame the odds to become the first and only London-based club to lift the Champions League trophy.

In 2021, Tuchel guided Chelsea to a narrow win over Manchester City in the Champions League final to earn the Blues their second crown in Europe's premier club competition.

The early months under Clearlake Capital saw a dizzying amount of players join the club. One gem discovered from Manchester City was Cole Palmer, who became the club's talisman almost immediately. The 2024/2025 season saw the Blues qualify once again for the Champions League and they also secured a title in the form of the Conference League too.

Chelsea have also tasted plenty of success in the FA Cup. The majority of these trophies came in the 2000s. The Blues' latest success in the FA Cup Final came in 2018, thanks to a 1-0 win over Manchester United, with Eden Hazard scoring the only goal from the penalty spot.

Chelsea FC Rivalries

Chelsea have several rivalries with fellow Premier League sides, including derbies with other teams also based in London.

The Blues' major rivals are Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. Chelsea vs Tottenham tickets have become a precious asset to possess when Spurs make the journey to Stamford Bridge, and likewise with Chelsea vs Arsenal tickets for when the Gunners pay a visit.

Chelsea Season Ticket Prices

Chelsea FC increased their season ticket prices ahead of the 2024/25 season, marking the club's first hike in General Admission season ticket prices since 2011.

The cheapest (adult) season ticket was subject to an 8% increase, from £595 up to £645. The most expensive season ticket was increased to £1,015, compared to £940 from the previous season.

A return to the Champions League for 2025/26 saw Chelsea increase prices once again.
