The Europa League is a major club competition which was formerly known as the UEFA Cup until 2009. It is the second most prestigious competition for European football clubs after the Champions League.

UEFA Europa League Format

The format of the Europa League has changed a number of times over the years, but has constantly involved a number of preliminary and qualifying rounds prior to the group stage.

The latest alteration to the Europa League format came ahead of the 2024/25 season. This change saw the 32-team Europa League group stage replaced by a 36-team league phase. Instead of eight groups consisting of four competitors each, all 36 teams are grouped together in a single 'league' format.

In the new Europa League league phase, every club will play against eight different teams – four at home and four away – instead of facing three sides twice each for a total of six matches. At the end of the league phase, the top eight teams will automatically qualify for the Round of 16.

Those placed from 9th - 24th will then compete in a two-legged knockout phase play-off, with the eight victorious clubs advancing to the last-16. The eight losing sides are eliminated from the Champions League and from European football awhole, similarly to those ranked 25th - 36th in the league phase.

The competition then continues as a traditional knockout tournament, with a Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final. The Europa League final is, without doubt, one of the biggest matches in the football calendar, and interest in Europa League final tickets is therefore, unsurprisingly, very high.
