Polly Jean Harvey, aka PJ Harvey, was born in October 1969 in Bridport, Dorset, and as a teenager, she quickly became skilled at many instruments, including guitar and saxophone.

Automatic Dlamini

She became a member of Automatic Dlamini, a Bristol-based band formed by John Parish and in 1991 she opted to go it alone and released her debut album, Dry, in 1992. The album was a commercial success and received glowing reviews.

Rid of Me

In 1993, she released Rid of Me, which rose to number three on the UK charts and also performed well in the United States, helping to put her on the map. The record included successful singles 50ft Queenie and Man-Size. The album also earned a prestigious nomination at the Mercury Prize in 1993.

Mercury Music Prize

To Bring You My Love also earned the same nomination and cemented her standing on the alternative music scene. In 2000, she released arguably her most critically acclaimed album to date, Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, which sold over a million copies worldwide, and she finally landed the Mercury Prize for this release.
