Rangers FC History

Glasgow Rangers were formed way back in 1872 and are one of the oldest football clubs in British football. Their first game against arch-rivals Celtic took place in 1888 and ended in a 5-2 defeat for the Gers.

The club's most successful manager, Bill Struth, took over at Ibrox Stadium in 1920 and led the club to 14 Scottish league titles and just ahead of the second world war Rangers drew a British attendance record of an astonishing 118,567 fans when Rangers beat Celtic in a New Year's Day Old Firm match.

The club experienced tragedy in January 1971 when the Ibrox disaster led to the death of 66 Rangers fans. The Ibrox Stadium side fought back from adversity to win the European Cup Winners Cup a year later.

Under Walter Smith, Rangers ruled supreme in Scotland, winning nine Scottish Premiership titles in a row between 1988 and 1997. Ally McCoist is the club's undisputed leading goal-scorer, with the Scottish international managing to score an incredible 355 goals over the span of 15 years at the Ibrox Stadium.

In 2012 Rangers were declared insolvent and were demoted to the Third Division. They speedily fought their way back to the top tier, and in 2020-21, under then boss Steven Gerrard, they won their first Scottish Premiership crown in ten years (and the Ibrox Stadium team's 55th overall).
